7 Useful Bowling Tips

One of the wonderful aspects of bowling is that almost anyone can play, and it is never too late to work on your skills! In this simple game, there are many ways to tweak and improve on your gameplay, whether you’ve been playing your whole life or you are a beginner. Even if bowling is little more than a social outlet for you, it is still fun to try and better your score over time, competition or not. Bowling tips from experienced bowlers can come in handy when you want to improve your game.

While there are many places to go to learn additional bowling tips, we have provided seven good bowling tips here to make your score that much better!

1. The Ball and Grip

The first basic step toward bettering your gameplay is to grip the ball properly.

Place your thumb in the thumb hole first, as deeply as it will go without your having to force it. It should feel comfortable. Rest your fingers naturally on the ball. As they cross the finger holes, the first joints of the middle and third fingers should extend about¼ inch past the edge of the holes. Now, without raising your thumb, place your fingers in the holes.

Your thumb should be relaxed, not gripping. The ball should have contact with the upper parts of your hand, and you should not be palming it. Keep your fingers spread out as far as you can for better control

It is important that the holes of the ball compliment your fingers. Too loose or too tight of a fit can and will affect your release, and as a result, your score. If you’re buying a ball, you can add finger grip inserts for both comfort and a snug fit.

An added bowling tip that can help some people is to is to crook your pinky finger. This acts as a cushion for the ball, relieving strain on the fingers. More important, it increases accuracy.

2. The Stance

To have the best end result during your turn, you must have a good start.

The exact location of your stance can vary from person to person, so make sure to find your “sweet spot” and take note of exactly where that is. There should be arrows and dots on the ground that you can use as markers to replicate your stance. Or, you can line yourself up with the pins.

A good bowling tip about aim is that if you’re right handed, you are aiming for the “pocket” between the front pin and the pin directly behind and to the right. Lefties are going for the same thing on the other side. Knowing how you bowl is key to figuring out how to line up. By the end of the game, as the lanes dry up, you may need to adjust your line up a few boards over.

Your stance is important because you can mechanically bowl the same every turn with the same hand and arm motions, but if you start at different places each time, then you will get different results.

3. Develop Good Timing

Every step in your approach should correlate with where your arm is relative to your swing, and where the ball is upon release. Take the same number of steps every time and focus on where the ball is in relation to those steps.

Consistency and repetition is important for this step. If you can get used to a routine, this will create a muscle memory. Every time you repeat it, you are reminding your body what you are about to do.

After doing this a number of times, you will surely start to get into the “swing” of things!

4. Hand and Wrist Action

Throwing a straight ball is one of the first goals for any bowler. If you haven’t mastered at least this yet, this is a good place to start when it comes to game improvement. Keeping your wrist and arm straight through your whole motion helps with this, and will help to avoid violent hooking. A common mistake that beginners frequently make is allowing their elbows to swing side-to-side during their approach. This is good way to end up with a dreaded gutter ball!

Extra bowling tip: There are a few different types of throwers when it comes to bowling. They can be referred to as “crankers”, “tweeners”, and “strokers”. “Crankers” are hard power throwers, with a big hook. “Strokers” bowl slow and straight. “Tweeners” are somewhere in between, with a medium speed and a gradual hook. There is also a new trend in bowling, using two hands, where the ball spins like a top.

Figure out your style, and then line up accordingly!

5. The Release

Maintain a straight position with your arm and wrist and release the ball as it passes your foot. It’s a good idea to allow your throwing hand to finish at shoulder level or higher. Enough practice and you’ll be able to finish in a balanced position.

6. Spares/Leftover Pins

Usually a powerful throw is what you want because the harder the throw, the more pins will fall. When trying to clean up the lanes with a spare/leftover pins, power down your hook by adjusting your wrist position and follow through, for more accuracy. You are still going to throw hard, just differently. Adjust your positioning according to pin placement.

7. Practice Makes Perfect

As with many other things in life, you will find that bowling gets easier the more you do it. Inevitably, if you bowl enough times with the goal of improvement, you will improve! It can be easier to get consistent bowling practice if you join a league at your local bowling alley!

Focus on using these bowling tips in addition to your regular gameplay. While your score may not improve dramatically overnight — you should begin to see improvement in time!

The Importance of a Good Pair of Bowling Shoes

Bowling Shoes

Whether you’re an expert bowler or it’s your first time knocking down pins, there are a few core elements of bowling that any player must consider. These things include the material and weight of your ball, your stance and how you actually throw the ball, and of course your bowling shoes!

Since most bowling alleys offer rental shoes, many bowlers don’t put much thought into their bowling footwear. But why are bowling shoes so important, and why do people need to wear different shoes to bowl, anyway?

Why Do We Need Bowling Shoes?

Though most have accepted it as “the norm” in bowling alleys, many often wonder why we need to wear special shoes when we play. The answer is simple: they keep you safe and prevent scuff marks and debris on the bowling floor and “approach area.” In addition to keeping things clean, bowling shoes help stave off wear and tear and keep the alley in good condition.

Another reason for wearing bowling shoes is that they help prevent falling and injuring your ankles, feet, knees, and back. When you wear regular shoes, there’s a chance that they will stick to the floor, or get caught when you go to bowl. When your shoes get stuck while you’re propelling your ball forward, there’s a chance you will trip over your feet and drop the bowling ball or stumble across the foul line. You can injure yourself and the people nearby if you lose control of the heavy bowling ball.

If everyone wore their street shoes onto the bowling lanes, instead of bowling shoes, they would track in all types of debris. The bowling lanes would get sticky, slippery, or overrun with minor tripping hazards. Some shoes can also create small chips and dents on the floor. While you can’t wear regular shoes when you to bowl, you can bring your pair of bowling shoes and wear those. All bowling alleys have rental shoes available if you don’t have your own.

What’s the Difference Between Bowling Shoes and Regular Shoes?

Bowling shoes are completely flat on the bottom, with no heel. They are typically made of leather and rubber and have synthetic laces.

The leather is exceptionally durable, and the rubber soles are meant to recreate the slickness of the bowling lane. Unlike most other shoes, the under-pad has a slide sole that helps you bowl with a fluid gliding motion.

Bowling shoes actually enhance your performance by providing the perfect amount of slip for your game. The amount of traction on a regular shoe or sneaker– while perfect for walking or hiking up terrain that can steep or irregular– is undesirable when going to bowl. On the flat and sleek bowling lane, you want to have a smooth gait in a smooth shoe.

These special shoes allow you to follow through with your release rather than tripping or getting caught on the floor. The high slip creates a smoother overall motion, which helps you better control the direction of your ball, and propel your ball with the exact amount of control and power that you want.

How to Choose the Right Bowling Shoe

Finding a Correct Fit

Like shopping for any shoe, making sure that your bowling shoes fit well is the most critical factor in choosing the right ones. A shoe that is too tight can lead to blisters, chafing, and pain, but a bowling shoe that is too loose can also cause chafing by sliding around too much on your foot. This will also negatively impact your balance and can throw you off your game.

Bowling shoes are available in multiple widths (narrow, wide, etc.) and it is important to find just the right shaped shoe for your foot.

Consider How Often You Bowl, or Plan to Bowl

If you only bowl once or twice a year, you may not feel the need to buy bowling shoes. After all, renting is convenient and relatively affordable. However, if you play more frequently than that, even if you’re not a regular bowler, you may still want to buy an inexpensive pair of bowling shoes. Casual, sporadic play doesn’t require the highest quality shoes, and since you’re not putting a lot of wear and tear on them, even an entry-level bowling shoe will hold up for a long time. You’ll end up saving at least as much as you would have spent on rentals during that time.

Where Do You Bowl?

If you rarely bowl and bowl in the same bowling alley, every time, a basic bowling shoe might be just fine. However, if you visit various bowling alleys, you may want to consider a performance bowling shoe. These higher-quality shoes typically allow for adjustments so you can respond to the unique conditions of whichever bowling alley you happen to be playing at.

How Serious/Competitive are You About Bowling?

If you regularly bowl, whether socially or competitively, you should definitely buy your own bowling shoes! Not only will you save money on renting, but you’ll also appreciate the difference your own shoes can make in your game.

Regular use means that you should opt for a higher-quality shoe, even if you aren’t in a league. You’ll want a shoe that can stand up to regular use and the wear and tear that comes with it. For social bowling, an athletic style bowling shoe will meet your needs. These look like sneakers as opposed to the classic bowling shoe style.

However, if you bowl competitively, you’ll definitely want to opt for a performance bowling shoe.

Do you need interchangeable sole and heel pads?

Competitive bowling requires a higher quality shoe, known as a competitive or performance bowling shoe. These shoes usually feature interchangeable sole and heel pads, allowing the bowler to adjust the slide vs. traction of their approach according to whatever surface they’re bowling on.

How to Throw a Memorable Holiday Bowling Party

The holiday season is a time of joy, family, food, and gift-giving. This enjoyable time of year is often a time that we look forward to and cherish with wonderful memories. However, along with the joys of the holidays can come a significant amount of preparation, planning, and stress. Take some of that stress off your plate and find relief by turning your regular party into a holiday bowling party!

The beauty of hosting a party at a bowling alley is that you have a built-in game to play and subject to talk about, so there won’t be any awkward silences or forced conversations. Being in a bowling atmosphere is conducive to a good time no matter how well the participants know each other, because everyone can participate in a good bowling game! Bowling is a game that can be played by young and old, inexperienced and professionals! There are also food and drinks at the ready; essentials for a good party.

By deciding to host your holiday bowling party at a venue such as SpareZ, you can ease some of that stress by knowing that your party will be a memorable and fun time for all! Here are some tips to help make sure that your bowling party is one for the books!

1.  Get an Accurate Head Count

Whether your bowling party is for co-workers, family, or friends, the first step to planning any event is to get a good judgement of how many people will be attending. This can be done with informal invites over the phone or email, or formally with written invitations. Any way you do it, it’s best to ask for people to RSVP by a certain date so that you have a solid cut-off date in order to make your reservations and plan your party in a timely manner.

2. Start Planning Early

The sooner you make your bowling party plans, the sooner you can breathe easy and focus on other holiday details! Venues can get booked pretty quickly this time of year, so it’s important to make your reservations as early as possible. It is also best to alert guests of what day and time your party is as early as possible, so they won’t have any other conflicting events or commitments that same day. You will need a general head count, and an idea of where you’re going, and what you’re doing. Decide what food you’d like to serve, and/or what holiday games you’d like to play.

Games such as “white elephant” will need a dollar amount limit set so that the attendees can plan accordingly and purchase the right gifts. A lesser dollar amount can be more inclusive to party attendees who have smaller budgets, but knowing your crowd is important; a higher dollar amount can be more fun for certain groups who can afford it. Be sure to run any big plans or ideas by your guests to make sure they agree with your plans, and the venue to make sure they are allowed.

3.  Consider All Types of People

Being inclusive is the considerate thing to do. People have different backgrounds and religions and often celebrate different winter holidays. Be sure that you don’t focus on one holiday or another, but try a more inclusive approach and use the words “holiday party” so that no one feels left out.

You may want to consider serving or ordering a few different food items in the case that someone has an allergy or is vegan, or at least asking guests their food preferences. Even if someone with food allergies or aversions may eat prior to an event or bring their own food, by asking and being considerate it makes people feel thought-of and cared for. The holidays are a time of joy and togetherness, and by keeping that friendly spirit everyone will surely enjoy their time!

4.  Have Fun!

If you want your bowling party to be a memorable hit, it has to be a good time! Incorporating dress themes like “ugly sweaters” or dressing up with holiday colors can be a fun addition to a regular bowling party.

It is important to remember that a party is meant to have a good time by all, so while some enjoy a more competitive game, some may just be bowling for fun. Keep the energy light and positive, and remember to cheer on participants even if they don’t have the best score.

Fun party favors are another way for guests to enjoy themselves. They don’t have to break the bank; simply party favors can often be inexpensive and can even be found at places like party stores or the dollar store. These fun treats will also go home with the guests, becoming a physical reminder of your fun holiday bowling party!

The History of Bowling: Delving Into the Origins of This Classic Game

Bowling is one of the most popular games in the world, played by over 120 million people in more than 90 countries. There are thousands of bowling centers in the US alone, providing a place for young and old, big and small, experienced and inexperienced, to come together and knock down some pins. But where exactly did this game begin? What are the origins of such a fun and versatile sport? Let’s delve into the history of bowling, so that we can better understand the game we have all come to know and love.

An Ancient Past

It is quite possible that different initial forms of bowling may have begun at different times and in different places, as reports of its origins date back thousands of years at a time when records weren’t as well-kept as they are today. The true history of bowling is not a simple nor linear progression.

Let’s take it back to 3200 BC, in ancient Egypt. Though there are surely some differences between the game played then and the game that is played today, some of the oldest remnants of bowling paraphernalia–a crude form of pins and bowling balls– were found in a child’s tomb. This collection was discovered by British anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie in the 1930’s. This find suggested that bowling, for the ancient Egyptians, may at first have been a game enjoyed by children.

The game can also be traced back to ancient Yemen, Germany, and Finland. In ancient Polynesia, players rolled disc-like balls of stone in a manner similar to modern-day bowling for the regional game called “Ulu Maika.” Various forms of bowling were also noted by Herodotus, an ancient Greek historian and geographer from the Greek city of Halicarnassus. According to him, bowling was an invention of the Lydians in Asia Minor.

In Germany, somewhere around 300-500 AD, bowling began to take shape into the game as we know it today. However, at the time it wasn’t used as a recreational game, but actually as a ceremonial ritual for church-goers. The pins represented evil spirits, and were knocked down by stone objects in the hopes that participants would cleanse their spirits and free their souls. In the case of a hit, the thrower was considered not to be a sinner. If the outcome was the opposite, then the parishioner was supposed to attend services more often.

The Evolution  into Bowling as We Know It

There is substantial evidence that a form of bowling was popular in England in 1366, when King Edward III allegedly outlawed it to keep his troops focused on archery practice during the 100 Years’ War. And it is almost certain that bowling was popular during the reign of King Henry VIII in the 1500’s. At this point there were still numerous different ways to play the game, as there is evidence of bowling games played with as little as 3 pins, and as many as 17.

In 1819 American literature, we see a mention of bowling by Washington Irving in the short story “Rip Van Winkle.” In this story, Irving references bowling by telling a tale of a man who goes into the woods and is tricked into a 20-year slumber by a group of men drinking and playing “nine-pins.”

As time went on, bowling continued to develop and grow in popularity across Europe, where it was not unusual to see bowling greens at the estates of the wealthy. However, the game began to gain a bad reputation due to the associations with gambling and drinking. The American nine-pins game (named so because it was typically played with 9 pins) was no exception to this association with seedy activities. As a result, the game of nine-pins was banned completely in many places, including Connecticut and New York. To counteract this law, bowlers simply added another pin, turning the game into “10-pin bowling,” which had technically not yet been outlawed. This may have been the catalyst that created the 10-pin game we play today.

Despite the laws and attempts from the government to put a stop to bowling, the will of the people was stronger. Games continued to be played, often outside the main parts of the city to maintain more secrecy.

As German immigrants began to move westward, the game’s popularity continued to increase rapidly nationwide. That progress led to the formation of the American Bowling Congress in 1895 after the basic rules had been codified and equipment regulations got established. The first championship tournament was held in 1901.

Technological Advancements

As we moved into the progressive era in America’s history, many areas of bowling were also improved upon and enhanced at a rapid pace. Whereas bowling balls had been primarily wooden before, in 1905 the first rubber bowling ball was created called the “Evertrue.” A decade later in 1914, the Brunswick Corporation developed a new ball made of a material called “mineralite”. These bowling balls were one of the most durable consumer goods ever manufactured; it sold in the millions with a lifetime warranty, yet only a handful were ever returned as defective.

In 1952, the first “pin spotter” machine came about to reset the bowling pins on its own, relieving the position of the “pinboy.” Before this, a person called the “pinboy” would physically have to reset the pins after every turn.

Though rubber and mineralite bowling balls were produced well into the 1980’s, in 1959 a new invention took hold of the sport; the plastic/polyester bowling ball. Some plastic balls are still produced today, primarily used by children and beginners. The 1950’s brought upon additional bowling advancements, such as electronic scoring and monitors.

While the plastic bowling ball replaced the rubber bowling ball as the ball of choice on the Professional Bowlers’ Association tour in the 1970’s, some issues arose with the ball’s inefficiency in reacting to lane conditions. This problem was solved in the 1980’s with the introduction of balls with urethane finishes, and as bowling lanes were widely coated with a urethane finish as well. This gave bowlers a better overall hook potential despite requiring much more general maintenance (repeated use gummed up the ball’s pores with lane oil and reduced its overall effectiveness).

Urethane bowling balls are still widely used to this day, and they’re also the general base for the newest and most popular modern-day bowling ball advancement – the reactive resin bowling ball.

As the world continues to change, inevitably so will bowling. It is incredible to see how one sport can advance and improve over the years, and these improvements can only continue. While we can’t know for sure where bowling will be taken in the next 100 years, we do know one thing for certain; the world’s love for bowling will always be around.

5 Reason Why Bowling is Good for Kids

5-Reason-Why-Bowling-is-Good-for-Kids

Bowling is an amazing sport for people of all ages. It is an amazing mental and physical exercise. If you are a parent looking for something that can help your children enjoy their leisure period and toughen themselves, then bowling is the best option.

Bowling is a great social sport. If you are skeptical of taking your kids to a bowling alley, then our blog will provide you with amazing insight on why bowling is good for kids both physically and mentally.

1. Improves Social Skills

According to Capital Bowl, about 2 million people socialize and bowl together each week in leagues in the US. Bowling allows kids to spend quality time with their friends and share ideas and knowledge. Enjoying time with their friends allows them to improve communication and reduce loneliness.

2. Affordable

Taking your children to an entertainment facility is not affordable. Simply imagine Disney! There are so many amazing places where you can take your children like tennis lessons, horse riding, amusement parks and more which cost you quite a fortune. Compared to them, bowling is quite affordable.

There are some amazing bowling facilities that offer less entry fee or minimum monthly cost with some top-notch equipment for your children to enjoy. At Davie SpareZ, we offer amazing bowling lessons for your kids if they want to take themselves to the next level.

3.  Improves Confidence

This is a super entertaining game… yet it requires patience and dedication to improve your skill. It is a test, and it helps your children work on constant improvement.

When your kids participate in an activity like bowling your kids are exhibiting and strengthening their capacity to advance and enhance it. Training and strengthening your children’s physical ability improve their self-awareness, giving your children a more comprehensive picture of themselves, which is essential for increasing their self-confidence.

4. Improves Problem Solving Capabilities

Bowling is more than just rolling the ball down the lane. It entails far more preparation and solving problems than that. For each round, you must release the ball at precisely the appropriate time and angle. After a few pins have fallen, you must determine where to roll the ball next for the remaining pins to fall. Bowling improves your children’s strategic thinking abilities and promotes the use of trial and error.

5. Improves Flexibility

You can bet that as they bowl more, they’ll get more flexible. Bowling necessitates a wide range of motion. Your children will not only be leaping and bending on a daily basis but they will also be required to stabilize their muscles in terms of balancing as they reach the lane. They will gain more stability and flexibility as they practice.

The benefits of bowling are uncountable for people of all ages. Children can greatly benefit from spending their time at the bowling alley. Mental and physical exercise will boost their confidence and improve their social skills. If you’re looking for an affordable bowling alley in South Florida, Davie SrapreZ is an amazing option. Why Should You Celebrate Your Birthday at a Bowling Center?

Are you planning to throw an amazing birthday party this year and looking for a creative place to get your friends and family excited? You might have thought about throwing a lavishing party at a club or beach. But, do you want to do something completely unique this year and make your birthday memorable? A bowling center is a creative and unique place to celebrate for people of all ages. So, we would love to share some top-notch reasons why you should celebrate your birthday at a bowling center.

1. The Fun Never Stops

Avoid the traditional birthday supper at a restaurant. Get active and socialize. Engaging with friends and relatives while knocking down pins will offer you joy and laughter, whatever your skill level. Bowling is a sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages, from three to ninety. If your gathering consists of only adult friends or family members of all ages, this party will be enjoyable for everybody.

2. Don’t Have to Worry About Weather

Whether the weather prediction calls for sun, rain, or snow, planning a birthday party at your neighborhood bowling alley goes down without a hiccup no matter what. When you’re throwing your event indoors, it doesn’t matter if it’s hot or rainy outside. The success of your celebration is not dependent on the weather, so there is no risk of a wasted day.

3. Lessens Your Workload

When you organize a birthday at a bowling alley, you delegate a large portion of the birthday party planning to the bowling alley’s personnel. The bowling alley’s employees can ease your burden and guarantee the party goes smoothly by preparing food and drinks, delivering a personalized cake, and more. This allows you to experience your birthday celebration fully. You also won’t have to bother about cleaning up afterward since the bowling alley personnel will take care of it as well.

4. Plenty of Room to Explore

If you’ve ever thrown a birthday celebration at your house or at a neighborhood restaurant, you’ll understand how things might get a little crowded for you and your guests. When you arrange a party at your local bowling alley, you give your guests plenty of space to move about in-between sets. Chill in the lobby, have a drink at the bar, or play some vintage games. If anyone in your group wants a breather from bowling, there’s plenty to do.

5. Endless Food Options

A culinary menu might be difficult to negotiate with any large party. Pizza and soda are safe bets, but some visitors may be finicky or have dietary intolerance. Birthday parties at many bowling alleys have the comfort of a built-in restaurant ready to prepare everything you want.

If you are planning to bring your kids along, they can enjoy the amazing kid’s menu as well.

4 Reasons Why Bowling is a Perfect Summer Activity

A pair of bowling shoes and bowling ball. A Great Summer Activity

After more than a year of rolling quarantines and pandemic concerns, Davie SpareZ is ready to get the summer back into the swing of things! What’s that? You were planning on going to the beach or Orlando this summer? That’s ok, Sparez is your everyday escape destination, not just for special occasions.

While bowling may not be the first summer activity you consider now that the restrictions are being lifted, it is actually one of the best summertime activities in which everyone in Florida can participate, and here are just a few reasons why…

1: Beat the Heat (and Rain)!
In Florida, the heat is everyone’s problem. While spending time outside will definitely be a goal after the last year of limited outings, Sparez provides a much-needed break from the elements. And while the heat can be oppressive, summer thunderstorms are another obstacle to outdoor plans. If you get rained out, just remember that bowling is the tried-and-true, family-friendly activity that you can participate in anytime the lanes are open.

2: So Much for Kids to Do!
With the kids out of school, having already been so limited over the last year, it won’t be long before finding things for them to do becomes a challenge. Bowling has always been a family activity, regardless of age or skill level, making it a great way to get the entire family involved!

Younger kids can use the bumpers (available electronically, so you do not have to wait for them to get set up) and have a great time just learning to get the ball down the lane. Teenagers have the opportunity to get competitive and acquire new skills. Don’t forget, we have a “Mommy & Kids” league on Saturday mornings, and Pizza Bowl parties available throughout the week (which you can confirm on our events page here).

We anticipate our arcade will be open again soon, while we have Giant Connect Four, billiards, an amazing snack bar and more, to keep everyone engaged and entertained, no matter how old!

3. Bring a Date!
Once again, available regardless of the weather conditions, bowling is a great summer activity while you are getting to know someone. And who doesn’t like a little friendly competition? Try our Lighting Strikes(R) events for state-of-the-art sound and special effects lighting that really gets the blood pumping! There’s a reason why bowling continues to be highly popular for dates throughout the country…and you should bring your date to find out for yourself!

4. The Fun is Affordable!
Spending on entertainment and activities often increases over the summer. Compared to water parks, theme parks, boat rentals, and more, the price for a bowling outing is much more reasonable for individuals or families. Visit our site often for a heads up on special deals, but know that bowling is very affordable without discounts. If you are looking for something to do on a whim, Sparez of Davie is the place to be!

Want some more reasons why bowling is one of the best options for summertime activities? Contact the team at Sparez, the bowling destination conveniently located on University Drive in Davie, FL to learn more about our leagues and opportunities. We look forward to welcoming you to our lanes!

Bowling Scoring: How to Keep Score at the Lanes

Sparez Bowling Center

Source: Beginner Bowling Tips

Even though bowling scoring is almost always done automatically by an electronic system, it’s still necessary to learn the fundamentals of how it’s done. You should have a general understanding of all the numbers and symbols on the screen, and you should be able to calculate what is needed to reach a certain score or beat an opponent when you’re in the middle of a game. This article will teach you all about keeping a bowling score.

The Basics of Bowling Scoring

A game of bowling consists of 10 frames, each with two opportunities to knock down the pins (except for the final frame). The best possible score you can get is 300, which is known as a perfect game.

If you topple all 10 pins on the first try; this is known as a strike, and your turn is over. If you take two throws to knock down all 10 pins, it is called a spare.

On a scoresheet, you will see 10 big boxes on a horizontal line next to your name. These represent the 10 frames. You will also see a smaller box in the right-hand corner of each large one.

The number of pins knocked down on the first throw is written in the space to the left of this small box, while the number knocked down on the second throw goes in the box. The diagram on the right is an example where a bowler knocked down 6 pins on the first throw and 3 on the second, for a total of 9 pins for the frame, which is found in the middle of the large box.

How to Score Strikes and Spares

On the scoresheet, a strike is marked with an X and a spare is denoted by a / symbol. The reason these are especially valuable for high scores is that you get to add on pins from the next frame to the 10 that you just knocked down. Let me explain how this works.

A spare counts as 10 pins plus the number of pins knocked down on your next throw. (In other words, your score isn’t actually recorded until you have moved on to the next frame.) So if you get a spare and then a 6 on the first ball of the next frame, your spare will be counted as 16.

For a strike, it’s even better, as you add the value of the next two rolls to the 10 pins. For example, if you get a strike and then bowl a 6 and a 3 on the next frame, it will count as 19. The absolute best score you can get in a frame is 30, which would require you to bowl two more strikes on your subsequent rolls. Because of this, bowling a few strikes in a row will have a huge impact on your score.

Check out the example below of the first 4 frames of a game of bowling and see if you can follow along.

The 10th and final frame is the only one where you’ll see something different, as there are three small boxes. If you bowl a strike or a spare, you get the benefit of a bonus shot. If you bowl a strike on your first shot of the 10th, you get two additional shots, and if you bowl a spare, you get one.

Other Symbols Used in Bowling Scoring

There are a couple of other symbols you’ll encounter on a bowling scoresheet.

If you leave a split, which is a setup of multiple pins with a gap in between them, it will be marked on the scoresheet with a circle surrounding the number of pins you knocked down (see right).

Any throw that does not knock down any pins will be denoted by a dash (see right).

Finally, a foul line infraction (stepping over the line when making your throw) will be marked with an F and any pins knocked down will not be counted.

How to Choose a House Bowling Ball at the Alley

When you’re just starting to bowl, it’s unlikely that you will have your own ball and you’re most likely relying on the ones provided by the alley. These are known as “house balls” and you’ll plenty of them find them sitting on racks near the lanes.

It’s very important to take some time to carefully select your ball. A bad fit can be disastrous to your scores, but a proper match can greatly improve your results on the lanes.

What to Look For in a House Ball

The two main things to look for in a house ball are weight and finger holes. In addition to these factors, you should carefully inspect the outside cover of the ball to see if there are any major dents or chunks that would affect its roll down the lane.

Proper Ball Weight

Most house balls will say their weight right on their cover, and some alleys may use a color-coded system for different weights. If there’s any doubt, don’t hesitate to ask the alley staff.

Female adult bowlers should start out with an 11 or 12 pound ball while most adult men should feel comfortable with a 14 or 15 pounder.

Understand that these are just general guidelines and your ideal weight will vary depending on your body type and strength. You should try these weights but be sure to adjust if it does not feel right.

There is also a simple test that you can try out to see if your ball is too heavy. Hold the ball in the palm of your bowling hand and extend your arm. Place your non-bowling hand below for additional support, and see if you can comfortably hold the ball for about 5 seconds. If you can’t, the ball is too heavy for you and you should move down to a lighter one.

The Right Finger Holes

First, you want the thumb hole to be snug, but big enough so that your thumb can come out easily without too much resistance or a loud pop. If the hole is too big, you will put too much stress on your thumb joint, which can lead to poor shots and even injury.

You want the finger holes to be large enough so that you can insert your fingers fully up to the second knuckle. (This is known as a conventional grip, the only one which should be used with a house ball.) Your middle and ring fingers should be stretched naturally and comfortably.

Even Better – Invest in Your Own Ball

Although their popular for beginners, house balls have some significant disadvantages. First, no matter how long you look, it’s unlikely you will find a ball with an just the right fit for your fingers. You’ll usually have to settle for a pretty good fit, and if the thumb hole fits, the finger holes might seem a little too loose, or vice versa.

Since house balls are drilled to be used by both left and right handers, the two finger holes are the same size. Your middle finger is larger than your ring finger, however, so this also contributes to a less than optimal fit.

It’s very tough to find any sort of consistency when you’re using different equipment each time, and house balls vary greatly in the size and placement of the finger holes. While you can often settle for a decent fit, it’s much better to make the investment in a ball that is drilled specifically for your hand.

Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Bowling

Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Bowling

When thinking about bowling, our minds often fill with thoughts of fun nights out with friends, relaxing after-hours with coworkers, or even childhood birthday parties. So, it may surprise most to realize that bowling is also great exercise.

The best part is: there are almost no limits on who can bowl. It’s a low impact, easy-to-learn sport, making it great for all ages, from young children to senior citizens. Some bowling alleys even have specialty lanes for people in wheelchairs and those who are visually impaired.

So if you already love bowling, or are looking for a fun new way to burn some calories, here are all the health benefits you can expect from bowling just one night a week.

Burns Calories

The average bowler walks up to 60 feet every turn, which totals more than half a mile in a standard three-game series. Bowling burns anywhere from 175-300 calories an hour – which is the equivalent of jumping rope for 25 minutes.

Strengthened Muscles

The average bowling ball weighs around 14 pounds. When you repeatedly swing and release the ball, that 14-pound weight tones your shoulders, arms, chest, and legs. Gripping the ball itself strengthens the muscles in your hands. During a three-series game, you’ll throw the bowl an average of 54 times. That’s a lot of reps!

Improved Flexibility and Balance

While we’re on the subject of throwing a 14-pound ball, your strength isn’t the only thing that will benefit from this repeated motion. The twisting, lunging, and stretching bowling requires improves your flexibility. Every time you extend your arm and body, your joints, ligaments, and muscles are extending with it. Not to mention, carrying extra weight on your upper half leads your lower half to offset the difference with improved balance and poster.

Better Hand-Eye Coordination

Throwing a ball and striking a group of pins nearly 60 feet away requires a lot of hand-eye coordination. Think about it. In basketball, the half court line is 47 feet to the net – which means you’re throwing a bowling ball further than NBA players going for that game-winning play. What’s even better? Coordination improves with practice over time, so the more you bowl, the better you’ll get.

Improved social life

Bowling is a social sport. Whenever you’re not on the lane, you’re usually hanging out with your teammates and friends. According to Psychology Today, people who socialize even once a week tend to have a stronger immunity, and are at less likely to suffer from depression and certain types of cancer.

Conclusion

Overall, bowling is great stress reliever. While we all have our off nights, the physical exercise and socialization associated with bowling far outweighs the benefits to your body than the frustration of the odd gutter ball. So, next time you’re at the lanes, remember: it’s not just fun. It’s good for you.
